Cain Lamarre, one of the most recognized law firms in Quebec, embarked on a strategic reflection on the role of artificial intelligence and data valorization in its operations. Aware of the growing challenges related to information management, the complexity of legal processes, and the sector's digital transformation, Cain Lamarre aimed to adopt a structured framework to address these changes responsibly, securely, and in alignment with its business reality. To support this ambition, the firm enlisted Videns to help develop a vision, define a strategic roadmap, and raise awareness among its teams about AI and data/AI governance.
As a result of this initiative, Cain Lamarre now has a clear roadmap to guide its efforts. This vision, built collaboratively with internal stakeholders, helps prioritize actions based on the organization’s actual needs.
The firm is now better equipped to gradually integrate technologies, with around twenty identified actions designed to close maturity gaps and reach its target AI maturity level. These actions are organized within a structured matrix balancing feasibility, complexity, and internal value across four strategic pillars: exploration, quick wins, key innovations, and long-term integration.
The project's original goal was to support Cain Lamarre in its digital transformation by laying the foundation for strong, legally adapted data and AI governance. Specifically, the mandate aimed to:
-Define a roadmap for data valorization and artificial intelligence
-Assess the firm’s current maturity in analytics, governance, and skills
-Train staff on AI fundamentals, ethical issues, and legal applications, while aligning teams around a shared vision
-Identify high-potential use cases as priorities for implementation
From the start, several challenges emerged, highlighting the project’s complexity within a legal context. Maturity levels in AI and analytics varied across departments, complicating a unified approach. Establishing clear governance for data and algorithm use was essential, especially due to confidentiality and compliance requirements.
Raising team awareness about technological concepts—often seen as abstract or risky in legal practice—was another key challenge. Furthermore, Cain Lamarre needed a structured framework to prioritize its tech initiatives, making decision-making more complex. Strategic alignment between AI projects and business goals was crucial to ensure relevance and long-term impact.
Meanwhile, ensuring data security and availability while maintaining confidentiality remained a top priority. A thorough evaluation helped identify weaknesses and propose a more structured data organization, laying the foundation for robust governance capable of supporting fast, secure projects.
Videns’ end-to-end support guided Cain Lamarre through every step, from building the roadmap to training its teams.
Two high-value use cases were recommended as key priorities: Client File Opening and Conflict-of-Interest Detection.
Creation of customized learning modules tailored to the legal sector.
The project made it possible to explore high-potential use cases. Two initiatives in particular were deeply analyzed to illustrate the potential impact of AI on legal operations: conflict-of-interest detection and client file opening automation. These currently manual and time-consuming processes could save up to 50% of the time typically spent by administrative staff. These two initiatives helped anchor the strategic reflection in concrete examples and highlighted the conditions needed for successful future implementation.
Finally, a tailored training program was developed to strengthen internal capabilities and support AI adoption within the firm. By combining strategic awareness, thematic modules (ethics, generative AI, data governance), and hands-on training, this program enabled Cain Lamarre to better understand AI-related issues, align teams around a common vision, and lay the groundwork for a sustainable and operational transformation.
